Ordering & delivery
How do I place an order?
All orders must be placed securely through our website. This ensures your chosen size, colour, opening direction and accessories are recorded accurately. We do not take orders by telephone, but our team can help by email or live chat before you order.
Where do you deliver?
We deliver within mainland England, Scotland and Wales. Some remote and offshore postcode areas are excluded. Please review our Delivery Information before ordering if you are unsure whether we can deliver to your address.
Is delivery free?
Free mainland UK delivery is available on double-swing driveway gates, garden gates and automatic bollards. Delivery is charged for cantilever sliding gates, and for accessories ordered without a gate. Any applicable charge is shown at checkout.
How long will my order take?
The current estimated lead time is shown on each product page and repeated during checkout and in your order confirmation. Made-to-order options such as custom widths, custom RAL colours and factory-fitted handle sets generally take longer than standard configurations.
When will my delivery date be confirmed?
A delivery date is not confirmed when the order is placed. We will email you once the order is ready and our supplier has scheduled the delivery route. The driver normally contacts you on the evening before delivery with an estimated arrival time.
What happens after I place my order?
You will receive an order confirmation summarising your products and estimated lead time. Your order then moves through processing and production. We will contact you when the delivery date has been arranged. Please do not book an installer until the order has been delivered and checked.
Can I change or cancel my order?
Contact us as soon as possible with your order number and the change required. We will try to help, but changes are not always possible once production or preparation has started. Cancellations are subject to our Terms & Conditions and cancellation policy.
I have not received my order confirmation. What should I do?
Check your spam or junk folder and confirm that the email address entered at checkout was correct. If the confirmation is still missing, email support@residentialgates.co.uk with your full name, delivery postcode and approximate order time.
What should I do if something is missing, damaged or incorrect?
Check the order as soon as it arrives. Email our support team with your order number, a clear description of the issue and photographs where relevant. Keeping all packaging and product labels until the issue has been reviewed will help us resolve it more quickly.
Measuring & options
How do I choose the correct gate size?
Measure the finished opening at several points and use the calculator on the relevant product page. The calculator includes the required hinge, centre and lock clearances and will show the suitable standard or custom-width option.
How much clearance is required for a garden gate?
Our standard garden gate setup normally requires 30mm total clearance: 10mm on the hinge side and 20mm for the lock keep receiver. Always follow the calculator and measurement diagram on the specific product page.
How much clearance is required for double-swing driveway gates?
Most double-swing designs normally require 50mm total clearance: 20mm at each hinge side and 10mm between the two gate leaves. Some designs use different hinge allowances, so the product calculator is the final guide for your selected model.
Do I need aluminium posts?
Posts are normally required where there are no suitable supporting walls or existing posts, or where part of a wider opening needs to be filled. For double-swing gate sets wider than 3000mm, 150mm posts are generally recommended. The supporting structure must be suitable for the gate weight and installation method.
Can the gates be made to a custom size?
Garden and double-swing driveway gates can be ordered at a custom width. Cantilever sliding gates can be made to a custom width and height. The available limits vary by design, so use the product calculator or contact support before ordering an unusual size.
Can I order a custom RAL colour?
Custom RAL colours are available on our aluminium gate ranges. Composite garden gates are available only in the listed frame and infill colour combinations and cannot be ordered in a custom RAL colour.
How is the height of a curved-top gate measured?
The listed height is measured at the highest point in the centre. The shoulders at the sides are approximately 200mm lower, so check the dimension drawing carefully where walls, pillars or neighbouring structures affect the available height.
Garden gates
Can a garden gate be hung on the left or right?
Yes. Our garden gates are universal and can be installed with the hinges on either side. The handle and lock keep receiver can be turned to suit the chosen opening direction.
Can I use two garden gates together as a pair?
No. Two single garden gates are not designed to operate as a coordinated pair. For a smaller double-opening entrance, a double-swing driveway gate set can be custom-width modified to suit the opening.
Can I fit a combination lock?
Our garden gates are designed around the supplied keyed handle set and lock keep receiver. They are not configured for a combination lock. Any third-party alteration should be assessed carefully because it may affect operation or the product warranty.
What is the maximum width of a single garden gate?
The maximum available width for a single pedestrian garden gate is 1500mm. Availability can vary by style and height, so confirm the permitted size through the product options before ordering.
How thick and heavy are the garden gates?
Our garden gates are approximately 45mm thick. Weight varies by model, width, height and infill style. A gate-weight table is provided on each product page to help you plan the installation and select suitable support.
What is included with a garden gate?
The supplied components are listed in the “What’s Included” section on each product page. The gate set normally includes the gate, hinges, keyed handle set and matching lock keep receiver. Posts and optional accessories are selected separately where required.
Driveway gates
Can double-swing driveway gates be manual or automated?
Yes. For manual operation, a factory-fitted handle set, two lockable drop bolts and a ground stop are normally recommended. Automated gates generally do not require the manual handle set or drop bolts. The final automation arrangement must be specified by your gate engineer.
What hinges are supplied with double-swing gates?
The gate set includes four wall-mounted hinges and two floor-mounted bottom hinges, allowing for the common wall-mounted and aluminium-post installation methods. Review the installation guide for the correct arrangement.
Can a handle set be fitted to driveway gates?
Yes. A driveway handle set can be factory fitted for manual operation. Because the gate leaves must be prepared during manufacture, an order with a factory-fitted handle set is treated as a custom order and follows the applicable custom lead time and cancellation terms.
How thick and heavy are the driveway gates?
Double-swing driveway gates are approximately 55mm thick. The weight varies significantly by style, size and height. Check the “Gate Weight” section on the product page before choosing posts, hinges or an automation system.
Can the gates open inwards or outwards?
The suitable opening direction depends on the hinge arrangement, ground levels, posts, accessories and the space available on the property. Confirm the complete setup before installation. Automated systems must be assessed by the installing gate engineer.
Sliding gates
What is a cantilever sliding gate?
A cantilever gate slides across the opening without a ground track running through the entrance. The gate is supported by a counterbalance section and roller system at the side, making it suitable where a conventional track would be inconvenient.
Can a cantilever sliding gate be manual or automated?
Yes. Cantilever gates can be configured for manual or automated operation. Automated versions should be installed, safety tested and commissioned by a competent gate automation engineer.
Are sliding gates available in custom sizes?
Yes. Cantilever sliding gates are made to order and can be specified at custom widths and heights within the manufacturing limits shown on the product page.
How is delivery charged for a sliding gate?
Sliding gates require a specialist delivery service and are not included within our free gate-delivery offer. Enter the delivery postcode at checkout to view the applicable charge before paying.
Can a cantilever sliding gate be returned?
No. Cantilever sliding gates cannot be returned, whether ordered in a listed or custom size and whether manual or automated. This does not affect your statutory rights where a product is faulty or not as described.
Installation, returns & care
Do you provide installation or a site survey?
No. Residential Gates is a supply-only online retailer and does not provide installation or site surveys. Manual garden and driveway gates may be suitable for an experienced DIY installer or tradesperson. Automated gates require a competent local gate engineer.
Where can I find installation instructions?
Visit our Installation Guides page for the main fitting guides and measurement diagrams. Product-specific information is also available within the “How To Install” and specification sections on each product page.
Who should install an automated gate?
An automated gate should be installed and commissioned by a competent gate automation engineer who can assess foundations, operators, controls, safety devices and force testing for the complete installation.
How do I care for an aluminium gate?
Wash the gate periodically with clean water and a mild, non-abrasive detergent, then rinse and dry it. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads and alterations that damage the powder-coated surface. Hinges, locks and moving parts should also be checked and maintained.
Can I return a gate or accessory?
Return rights depend on the product and whether it was made or modified to your specification. Bespoke and made-to-order products may not be returnable. Review our Returns & Refunds Policy before ordering or contact support for advice about a specific item.
What warranty is provided?
Our aluminium double-swing and garden gate structures include a 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. Cantilever sliding gate structures have a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, and automated cantilever configurations also include a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty on the automation components.
Warranty cover is subject to the applicable terms, correct installation and maintenance. The relevant details are shown on each product page.
